Eight years ago, Radianse made a choice to focus its real-time location platform exclusively on healthcare. Safety and effectiveness were top of mind. We have never wavered from that commitment, holding steady through the influx of all-purpose locating systems that converged on healthcare.
With a consistent focus on the optimal use model for healthcare, we can assure you that how we operate sets Radianse apart from other RFID systems.
The JAMA RFID Study
The Journal of the Americal Medical Association (JAMA) published a study on the potential hazards of using RFID in healthcare (JAMA. 2008;299(24):2884-2890). The study assessed two technologies, active 125 kHz and passive 868 MHz. Radianse Reveal does not employ either technology, rather it uses the medically proved and interference-free 433MHz frequency.
We consider the study’s results to be confirmation of our choice of technology, a boost both to our company and the hospitals that have wisely invested and are reaping the benefits of the first RTLS designed exclusively for healthcare.
Let’s get specific as to why the Radianse system is safe and effective:
The right frequency - Radianse operates at 433MHz, a UHF frequency set aside by the Federal Communications Commission that is in a band used for decades to monitor EKGs of ambulatory patients -- with no interference
No use of exciters - Radianse does not use an excitation signal – our receivers simply pick up the signal from the tag
Low power - At their highest output, Radianse tags emit 200,000 times less power than tested systems
Hundreds of millions of hours of interference-free operation - In the past eight years, Radianse systems have operated for hundreds of millions of hours inside healthcare institutions with no reported incidents of interference
You may still have questions and we welcome them. An open dialogue with the hospitals we serve is another founding principle of Radianse. Read JAMA Frequently Asked Questions or send us an email.
How does the Radianse use of RFID technology compare to technologies tested in the JAMA article?
Radianse RFID Technology
Radianse Reveal is very different in power and frequency than what was tested in the JAMA article. Radianse designed their low power solution without exciters for the healthcare environment. Signals are transmitted one way only, from tag to receivers so that the power emitted is 200,000 times less than the tested systems.

Radianse Technology Emits 200,000X Less Power
Radianse receivers do not transmit but accept signals from battery operated tags.

Radianse tags send signals using a UHF frequency in the same band safely used for decades for medical telemetry with no interference. With hundreds of millions of hours of use, Radianse systems have no reported interferences.
